<p class="isSelectedEnd"><strong>— What was the moment that inspired you to pursue this method?</strong></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">After my knee surgery and eight years of living with pain, the most defining moment came when I began applying the Functional Patterns method to my own body. I remember it as if it were yesterday: I completed a technique, started walking, and suddenly my leg felt light and pain-free.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At that moment, I experienced the power of natural rehabilitation through retraining the body. That experience radically changed my life, and since then, I have dedicated myself to helping people overcome chronic pain.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><strong>— How does it provide a long-term solution compared with conventional methods?</strong></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Functional Patterns (FP) method, developed by Naudi Aguilar, changes an individual’s posture and movement patterns. This means that the person “takes” the change with them after the session, as their body begins moving according to a new, more efficient pattern.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">It provides visible and long-term results that other approaches often struggle to achieve. The effectiveness of Functional Patterns lies in treating the body as an integrated system rather than focusing solely on individual areas of pain, which are simply symptoms.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><strong>— How does movement training affect the nervous system, and what experience stands out to you?</strong></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Posture directly influences brain function and reflects emotional and intergenerational patterns. Functional Patterns applies this understanding by retraining movement through targeted exercises and proper alignment, positively influencing the nervous system.</p>
<p>This is important for everyone, but particularly for people with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease, as they can improve their mobility and quality of life. And that is something that deeply moves me.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>Nikoletta Kaseri: The First Woman in Greece Specializing in Human Biomechanics</h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Nikoletta Kaseri is a professional fitness trainer, Greek judo champion, and the only woman in Greece specializing in Human Biomechanics, an approach that promises a daily life free from pain.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">It all began after she suffered a serious injury during a judo tournament and had to undergo surgery. For eight years, she lived with pain every day until she discovered the Functional Patterns method, through which she learned how to move and live without pain.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">She is the first woman in Greece to apply this method, and in her interview today with <em>Dimokratiki</em>, we explore her journey—from growing up in Rhodes and achieving success in competitive sports to undergoing surgery and eventually specializing in a training method based on the evolutionary design of human movement.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><strong>• When did you first become involved in sports?</strong></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">I was born and raised in Rhodes, and from an early age I had a natural inclination toward sports. In addition to the countless hours I spent playing football in the schoolyard and around the neighborhood, I participated in several sports throughout my childhood, including swimming at the NOR academies, athletics at the Diagoras Stadium academies, and basketball with the girls’ team at Diagoras.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">In 2004, I started practicing judo at G.S. Athlitis and attended the Venetokleio Sports Junior High School and High School. From 2004 to 2010, I placed first in the Dodecanese Championships. I also won first place in the 48 kg category at the Greek Junior Women’s Judo Championships in 2004 and 2009, second place at the Greek Championships in 2005, 2006, and 2008, and fifth place at the 2009 Balkan Junior Women’s Championship. I was also a member of the Greek Junior Women’s National Judo Team.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">In 2010, I was admitted through the national university entrance examinations to the School of Physical Education and Sport Science at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2013, I received an ERASMUS scholarship and spent six months studying at Université de Lille II in Lille, France.</p>
<p>I graduated in 2014, specializing in Outdoor Activities and Sports Tourism.</p>

Numerous studies, including a meta-analysis published in <em>The Lancet Public Health</em>, have shown that the number of steps we take each day is directly associated with a reduced risk of mortality.</p><p>According to the findings, 6,000–8,000 steps per day for older adults, or 8,000–10,000 for younger adults, are enough to significantly reduce the risk of death from all causes. This finding has contributed to the widespread belief that: <strong>If I’m moving, I’m healthy.</strong></p><p>And this is where the problem begins.</p><p>Because in reality, this view is incomplete—and often misleading.</p><p>The modern approach to exercise places excessive emphasis on <strong>how much</strong> we move—we count calories, steps, and minutes of physical activity. But we rarely pay attention to <strong>how</strong> we move.</p>								</div>

									<h2>Simply Moving Isn’t Enough — We Need to Change How We Move</h2><p>The human body is designed to move with coordination, alignment, and functionality. The way we walk—in other words, our movement pattern—is a reflection of our biomechanical function.</p><p>Scientific studies examining how the body functions in states of pain and dysfunction point toward a common conclusion:</p><p><strong>The quality of movement is determined by movement patterns and muscle activation—not simply by the amount of physical activity.</strong></p><p>People with osteoarthritis, chronic lower back pain, neurological conditions, and even seemingly “healthy” individuals who exercise may exhibit:</p><ul><li><p>Muscle activation in the “wrong” areas</p></li><li><p>Poor load absorption during walking or basic movements</p></li><li><p>Overactive or underactive muscles that disrupt the body’s balance</p></li><li><p>Movement patterns that “lock” the body into poor posture</p></li></ul><p>These movement patterns do not change simply because we move more.</p><p>They are repeated every day and carried over into every form of physical activity: walking, running, exercise, work, and even rest.</p><p>And as long as the underlying movement pattern remains unchanged, neither more steps, more repetitions, nor more “hours at the gym” will solve the problem.</p>								</div>

									<h2>Why Traditional Gym Methods Are Not Enough</h2><p>One of the most important—and often overlooked—gaps in the fitness industry is assessment.</p><p>More specifically, assessment of the factors directly related to health and the prevention or management of pain. Unfortunately, experiencing pain during exercise has become so common that it has almost been “normalized.” Many people who exercise view pain as something to be expected or even as “proof” that the workout is working—a deeply rooted but misguided belief that needs to be challenged. And to challenge it, we first need to properly assess the current condition.</p><p>In most exercise programs, the most common goals include:</p><ul><li><p>Strength development, either general or in specific exercises such as squats, presses, and deadlifts</p></li><li><p>Increasing range of motion, primarily through passive stretching</p></li><li><p>Improving cardiorespiratory fitness</p></li><li><p>Addressing pain</p></li><li><p>Improving physical appearance</p></li><li><p>Rehabilitation after injury</p></li><li><p>Improving athletic performance</p></li><li><p>Enhancing functionality in everyday life</p></li></ul><p>All of these goals are reasonable and important—but there is one critical question: <strong>How are they objectively assessed?</strong></p><p>In traditional approaches, assessment is based almost entirely on quantitative data: how much weight someone can lift, the number of repetitions performed, heart rate, or completion time.</p><p>What is often missing is <strong>qualitative assessment</strong>—evaluating alignment, function, posture, and movement sequencing.</p><p>In other words: <strong>We measure how much we do, but not how we do it.</strong></p><p>And this leaves significant gaps, especially when the goal is rehabilitation, injury prevention, or long-term relief from pain.</p>								</div>

									<h2>What Happens in Practice: A Look at Gyms and Rehabilitation Centers</h2><p>If we look at what happens every day in gyms and rehabilitation centers, we can identify a common pattern: the body is treated not as a unified functional system, but as a collection of separate parts.</p><h3>1. Isolation Exercises</h3><p>The traditional approach of “arms today, legs tomorrow” is still widely used. This model is based on the concept of muscular isolation, as though the body were a machine made up of separate components.</p><p>However, the human body is not designed to function in isolated parts, but as a coordinated neuromuscular and biomechanical system.</p><p>The same applies in many rehabilitation centers: Does your shoulder hurt? You do exercises for the shoulder. But this is not true rehabilitation—it is a localized intervention that does not investigate <strong>why</strong> or <strong>how</strong> the problem developed in the first place.</p><h3>2. Strength Without Assessment</h3><p>Strength training is important—but only when applied with precision.</p><p>The body requires tension and compression at very specific points in order to function with stability, absorb impact, and maintain efficient movement. However, when resistance is applied without first assessing movement patterns, existing dysfunctions may simply become reinforced.</p><p>Training is not neutral. It either improves function or reinforces the problem.</p><h3>3. Repeating Dysfunctional Movement Patterns</h3><p>Every body has asymmetries—this is normal. The problem begins when these asymmetries become reinforced through training because movement correction is absent.</p><p>When someone repeatedly performs the same exercises, uses the same movement pattern, or maintains poor posture during exercise:</p><ul><li><p>The nervous system becomes increasingly conditioned to incorrect movement patterns.</p></li><li><p>Compensations become reinforced.</p></li><li><p>Asymmetries increase.</p></li><li><p>The body “learns” to move incorrectly more efficiently.</p></li></ul><p>More exercise does not necessarily lead to improvement. Without proper mechanics, repetition can become the enemy.</p><p>And all of this happens because the unique movement and biological characteristics of each body have not been taken into account.</p><h2>Can Movement Patterns Change? And If So, How?</h2><h3><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f9e0.png" alt="🧠" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Movement Patterns Can Change — But Not by Chance</h3><p>Human movement patterns can change thanks to one valuable property of the body: <strong>the adaptability of the myofascial system.</strong></p><p>Simply put, our bodies have the ability to adapt to the stimuli we provide, continually reshaping themselves according to how we use them.</p><p>This is precisely what the <strong>SAID principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands)</strong> describes:</p><p><strong>The body adapts specifically to any repeated stimulus—whether functional or dysfunctional.</strong></p><p>Based on this principle, and by viewing the body as a unified biomechanical system, we arrive at an important conclusion: our movement patterns—and our posture, which reflects them—can change.</p><p>However, there is one fundamental requirement:</p><p><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f511.png" alt="🔑" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <strong>The body must be approached according to how it is designed to function:</strong></p><p>Not as a collection of isolated muscles or joints, but as an interconnected, dynamic system that develops through organized, targeted movement.</p><p>Any exercise performed without respecting the biological architecture of the human body may reinforce existing dysfunctional patterns.</p><p>In contrast, when movement is designed according to the body’s natural mechanics, meaningful change can begin:</p><p>In movement patterns,<br />In posture,<br />In function,<br />And ultimately, in everyday quality of life.</p>								</div>

Therefore, to change our movement patterns, we need to optimize these specific functions. In other words, we need to focus on the way the human body is naturally designed to move.</p><h3>The Role of the Functional Patterns Method</h3><p>With the Functional Patterns method, we can achieve visible results in both posture and the restructuring of movement patterns, even in individuals dealing with musculoskeletal or neurological movement problems.</p><p>This is possible because:</p><ul><li><p>We respect the fundamental principles of human movement.</p></li><li><p>We take the evolutionary development of the human body into account.</p></li><li><p>We work with the body as an integrated system.</p></li></ul><h3>The Proven Answer to “How Can I Change My Movement Pattern?”</h3><p>By applying Functional Patterns protocols, changing posture with measurable and visible results, and optimizing movement across all planes, we can address dysfunctions and enhance the body’s natural mechanics.</p>								</div>

									<h3>Personally…</h3><p>As a judo champion and specialist in Human Biomechanics, I have experienced firsthand what it means to exercise while living with pain. I had to unlearn much of what I knew about exercise before I could begin healing my own body. Fascia is the body’s “living memory,” where long-standing patterns of defense, fear, and trauma are stored.</p><h2>Why Should We Change Our Posture and Movement?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">When we change our posture, we are not simply changing the way the body is positioned. By optimizing running, throwing can also improve. 									<h2>Forward Head Posture: The Human Body’s Adaptation to the Digital Age</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Forward head posture is a postural dysfunction in which the head shifts forward relative to the alignment of the shoulders, placing increased strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back. It is commonly seen in people who spend many hours in front of computers, smartphones, or other digital devices, adopting postures with the head tilted downward and the upper body rounded forward.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Although it may appear to involve only the neck or head, it is actually a dysfunction of the body’s entire posterior chain—the myofascial structure extending from the soles of the feet to the back of the head. When this chain is unable to properly support the neck, normal alignment is compromised, causing the head to shift forward.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Research has shown a strong association between poor posture and forward head posture. Numerous studies have also demonstrated an association between scapular positioning and neck pain, highlighting how different parts of the human body interact with and influence one another.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">At the same time, people suffering from chronic neck pain often experience:</p><ul data-spread="false"><li>Reduced cervical range of motion</li><li>Reduced movement speed</li><li>Impaired proprioception, meaning reduced accuracy in perceiving the position of the neck</li></ul><p class="isSelectedEnd">This dysfunction is not simply an aesthetic or ergonomic issue, but a sign of impaired biomechanical function that can affect both everyday movement and the health of the neuromuscular system.</p><p>By impaired biomechanical function, we mean a dysfunctional pattern of movement and, consequently, poor postural alignment.</p>								</div>

									<h2>Passive Neck Stretches: Are They Really the Solution?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">To assess whether static (passive) stretching is a solution for neck pain and dysfunction, we first need to understand how the human body and its muscles work—and, more specifically, how these stretches affect the joints.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">When it comes to the neck, the same principle applies as with other joints:</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Passive stretches provide short-term relief, but they often do not address the underlying cause and may contribute to additional micro-injuries, especially when performed without proper assessment.</p><h2>Why Does the Neck Hurt?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Most tension in the neck area is not simply a local problem. Instead of pulling your head from side to side to “loosen” your neck, you need to work on the body’s entire posterior chain.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">A more effective approach is active stretching through eccentric contraction:</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You create tension in the back muscles, extend the thoracic spine, and simultaneously flex the cervical spine, creating a controlled lengthening of the back of the neck.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">This type of active release provides greater control over movement rather than simply offering temporary relaxation.</p><h2>Why Does the Neck Shift Forward?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Forward head posture is not the problem itself—it is the symptom. It is a compensation made by the body due to insufficient thoracic extension and the inability of the posterior chain to maintain proper alignment of the head.</p><p>In conclusion, pain associated with forward head posture is a symptom, while the forward shift itself is a compensation for deeper postural dysfunctions.</p>								</div>

Because the bar is so close to the body, there is almost purely vertical compressive force. This supports the idea that the deadlift is not particularly effective at activating the posterior chain as a whole.</p><p>Another study found that deadlifts offer minimal improvements in low back pain and may not be helpful for individuals who lack good activation of their lower back muscles. Essentially, this study concluded that deadlifts were somewhat useful in reducing back pain for people who already had good activation of the back muscles and who began with low levels of pain. On the other hand, someone with a “weak lower back” may see no benefit.</p><p>Meanwhile, strengthening the posterior chain is certainly important for reducing back pain. A meta-analysis found that exercises targeting the posterior chain (such as thoracic and lumbar extensor exercises) were more effective than general strengthening in addressing low back pain in adults.</p><p>The data shows that maintaining proper contraction of the posterior chain muscles is critical for relieving and preventing back pain. As we saw earlier, the deadlift is not particularly effective at activating most of the muscles in the posterior chain.</p><p>While some may combine deadlifts with other posterior chain exercises to create a stronger workout, using more effective exercises may be the real solution.</p><p>Remember, deadlifts have the lowest margin of error compared to other exercises. Regardless of how the exercise is performed, it carries a high risk of injury. Modern science and research cannot fully prove this, as there is limited literature on the connection between injuries and pain with deadlifts. The little research that has been done shows that injuries tend to occur in the lower back.</p>								</div>
